Home business is booming, and many people are getting their first taste of business on eBay; why is this a good idea?. If you are interested in ecommerce, then I think eBay could be the perfect starting place for you because not only is their virtually no risk to you, but you can also get a feel for business and make a little (or a lot) of spare change on the side. Before you get going, however, I’d like to take a moment to discuss some of aspects of eBay It think you be aware of before you start putting up auctions.
First, take time to consider what product line you want to sell–if you don’t know, don’t worry as I’ll talk about that; it is enought that you are simply excited about selling on eBay. EBay is great for selling almost any product, but if you are going into business, it is normally considered standard practice to confine your selling to a particular niche; not that you can’t expand from their or switch niches entirely later on. Remember, you can always experiment and change your products around, but as mentioned before, at some point you will want to focus on a particular niche. As you persist and maintain good customer service and a consistent professional presence, you will see return business, and keep in mind that happy, return business will talk to other potential buyers, and that is invaluable. Remember, trust and loyalty can be everything.
When determining what to sell, the standard advice is to sell what you know. However, I would take that with a grain of salt. That can be one approach, but really, that can be easier said than done. But what if you can’t? For starters, try following an interest. Even if you start out not knowing very much about your products, if you are interested, the people who attend your auctions will pick that up from the descriptions you write, and that will help your auctions sell.
If you are not particularly interested in anything and not willing to be interested, then selling on eBay may not be the right choice for you. To begin, start with a list; write down the things you like; physically take yourself to shops and go to websites that sell stuff; talk to your friends and family. My standard advice is to start out by selling other people’s junk. Don’t worry about it not selling–anything will sell on eBay, and in the beginning it does not really matter if you make a profit or not–you probably will, and I think you will be surprises at how well you do with what you had thought was just junk. The point of doing this is that after doing a few auctions the whole process will begin to make more sense, and you will be able to think more clearly about what you want to sell; and who knows, you may decide to stick with “junk,” and you wouldn’t be the only one to make a fortune doing so.
When you have decided that you do want to give eBay a try as a business, you are now ready to think about profit and which products will work for you. I would advise not worrying about mass market consumer items, such as electronics. EBay is the world’s largest flea market and as such, there is a market for nearly everything. Keep in mind that eBay is great market place for collectors–so there is a market for obscure items, and eBay is the perfect place to sell them.
One other thing I want to mention is not something that you will have to think about right away, but once you do start making money, you will need to declare it as income on your tax returns (if you live in the United States). I also need to mention that if you sell products to residents of your own state, that you will need to have a tax permit; this is variably known as a sales tax permit, resale certificate, and seller’s permit and allows you sell retail items to persons living in your state. When you sell retail items to residents of the state in which you live, you need to add sales tax to those items, and then you pay the tax to your state treasury at tax collection time. This is not complicated, and you can find out more information from your department of revenue.
One other thing to remember is that not every day is a winner on eBay; everyone has days when their auctions lose. Everyone has them. No one’s auctions score 100% of the time. Never stop learning and never give up–those are your real keys to success on eBay. Anyone can sell on eBay if they want to, and almost anything can be sold. It would be unrealistic to say that eBay is right for everyone or that everyone who tries will succeed, but what is true is that it is a very practical way to test the waters of business with practically no start up cost and risk to you.
