The EBay Path to Starting Your Own Online Home Business

For many people, starting their own online business can seem an insurmountable problem; if this describes you, eBay may be the place to test the waters of eBay home business. First, it is a great testing ground for trying your hand at selling; second, there is practically no risk to you; and third, you have a chance to feel what it’s like to earn a little business income. However, before you dive in, there are a few things know before you go.

First, take time to consider what product line you want to sell–if you don’t know, don’t worry as I’ll talk about that; it is enough that you are simply excited about selling on eBay. Although you can sell any number of products, it is generally best to select a

particular product niche. Remember, you can always experiment and change your products around, but as mentioned before, at some point you will want to focus on a particular niche. What you have to gain from this is customer loyalty and trust as buyers enjoyed their auction experience with you will come back. Remember, trust and loyalty can be everything.

The usual advice given to eBay newbies who don’t know what to sell is to choose something they are familiar with. However, I would take that with a grain of salt. That is easy to say and all well and good if you can convert what you know about into items for sale. But what if you can’t? For starters, try following an interest. Although you may not be an expert in your product area, if you are interested, then as you continue to learn that knowledge and interest will shine through the descriptions you write and help sell your auctions.

I personally think that eBay can work for just about anybody, but it does require willing to persist and an ability to be interested in “stuff” and the people to whom you are selling. Start out by doing a little brainstorming–make a list, either in writing or speak into a recorder, of the stuff you like; get it down on paper or on “tape”; take some time and talk to friends and family, and don’t forget to do a little research on eBay, as well. If you are having trouble coming up with ideas, don’t worry; as I mentioned a moment ago, in the beginning it is enough to be interested, and that’s why my standard advice at this point is just to sell other peoples’ stuff–sell their junk.

Don’t worry about it not selling–anything will sell on eBay, and in the beginning it does not really matter if you make a profit or not–you probably will, and I think you will be surprised at how well you do with what you had thought was just junk. The point of doing this is that after doing a few auctions the whole process will begin to make more sense, and you will be able to think more clearly about what you want to sell; and who knows, you may decide to stick with “junk,” and you wouldn’t be the only one to make a fortune doing so.

You will want to give consideration to things that stand a chance of making a profit that is satisfactory for you. It is not necessary that you focus on items with wide public recognition. EBay is the world’s largest flea market and as such, there is a market for nearly everything. EBay can be the ideal selling environment for items you and I might think of as obscure or eccentric, and this is because, as mentioned above, eBay is a sort of garage sale on a grand, world scale.

If you find that you like selling and start making money, you need to know that if you are in the United States, you will have to declare it as income. If you think that you are going to sell on a regular basis, then it would probably be a good idea to get a sales tax permit. The sales tax permit is the license that your state gives you that allows you to purchase wholesale items without paying sales tax; you charge your buyers from your state of residence sales tax, which you later remit to your state treasury. This is not complicated, and you can find out more information from your department of revenue.

Keep in mind that there are good days and bad days on eBay. Everyone has them. Unfortunately, no one’s auctions make a profit every time, and as a business person, you will learn how to predict losses as well as financial wins. Not giving up is the real key to success on eBay as it is with any business. Anyone can sell on eBay if they want to, and almost anything can be sold. EBay may not be for everyone, but it can be a practical way to start out in business at very little or no start up cost to you. This is a chance to actually involve yourself in the practical aspects of business. Even if you decide you don’t like, you will have learned a great deal just from this one experience.
