Will EBay Dropship Product Sourcing Work for You?
EBay product sourcing and how to source products like an eBay power seller are hot topics on the Internet. In fact, these are ragingly hot topics even amidst the rising cost of eBay and eBay’s increasing orientation toward bigger business, such as buy.com and away from small sellers.
Dropshipping is an immensely popular way of selling online, whether you are using eBay, Craigslist, Amazon, or your own ecommerce site. Basically, a distributor, merchant, or factory producer you to sell products, but the dropshipper stocks the inventory it its warehouse and ships out products under your business name.
This is appealing for a number of obvious reasons. You, the seller, make no advance purchases, you do not stock inventory, and you sell only those items that your customers buy from you at your price mark-up. You pay the dropshipper and keep the profit–the difference between the dropshipper price and your price.
While this business model can generally be very successful, you have to watch out if you are planning to dropship on eBay. If you sell an item and your dropshipper is out of stock, you could be in trouble. You customer thinks that you have the item in your inventory. Another point to consider is that some dropshippers, such as Mega Goods or Petra, for example, may have dropship fees, so those will have to be factored in to the cost of your eBay items.
You also have to consider how saturated the eBay market is. The competition for many items on eBay is intense. One reason for this is that eBay is a wholesale selling environment. EBay prices are already at or below wholesale. You have to be prepared to meet and/or beat those prices.
So, if you are planning on dropshipping on eBay, you really do have to do the research to make sure your particular product line has a chance of succeeding. That requires market research–you might try using a tool such as Terrapeak (industry standard).
Setting up an Internet business with dropship wholesaling can be and is a good business model. But, that alone does not guarantee success. Please choose your products well and look closely at your dropshippers and other product distributors that you choose to do business with.
