The Salehoo Controversy and Untapped Ecommerce Niches

The controversy surrounding Salehoo seems never ending, and I can’t count how many people find this site wanting to know if Salehoo is a scam or not. That is why I’m talking about the Salehoo scam question again in this post. You can find other posts on this topic by searching under the category, “Salehoo Scam.” And make no mistake, there is a very outspoken sub-niche of people who fervently, and loudly believe that Salehoo is rip-off.

Perhaps you have come to this site seeking untapped ecommerce niches and want to know if Salehoo would be of use. So these are two questions I’ll try to help with–the Salehoo scam issue and untapped ecommerce niches. First, a word of disclosure–I am a Salehoo member. I paid my membership a fee a few years ago because I was curious about Salehoo, wanted to learn more about product sourcing and ecommerce, and was seeking new ideas for marketing physical products. Did Salehoo deliver?

Speaking from my own experience, I would say, “yes, it did.” I did learn more about product sourcing and ecommerce, and found many new ideas through the Salehoo resources and through interaction on the forum. In fact, I would say that on several occasions when some of the more experienced members and longtime Salehoo staff opened up, I had some real eye opening moments in regard to selling on eBay and how eBay works. I have to say that over the years of my membership, I have never felt that Salehoo was deceiving me in any way or engaging in any sort of bait and switch tactics.

The Salehoo directory really does offer contact information for a vast number product suppliers. The site claims access to 8000 categorized product suppliers across approximately 150 to 200 product categories. There are 19 main categories each with 5 to 10 subcategories, so in total between 150 and 200 product categories. In addition, there is a member forum where you can seek and give advice and opinions and ask for help finding product suppliers if you are having trouble. Many people joining Salehoo do so with specific plans to sell on eBay, and Salehoo does actively offer help with the know-how of selling on eBay and in other auction environments. Over the years since eBay started, it has developed into quite a sophisticated market place–it is no longer the naive selling environment of its youth, and for that reason alone, Salehoo’s eBay advice can be life-saving for eBay newcomers. And speaking of alternative auction venues, there is a rather long forum thread on just that subject that I use as my primary reference for that subject.

One thing I should mention at this point–should have brought it up at the beginning–is that Salehoo does not sell physical products. I know there is some confusion on that point, so I’ll say it again. Salehoo itself is not involved in any way in the selling of physical products. When you join Salehoo, you are NOT joining a sort of virtual Sam’s Club where you buy stuff. You are joining a membership that provides product supplier contact information and ecommerce know-how. That is very important, and I know that some people have joined and been very disappointed to discover that Salehoo was offering information on where to find products and how to sell them. So, one last time, Salehoo does not sell products.

Other people have been disappointed to find that could still not make money on eBay or on their own ecommerce sites. That is unfortunate and truly sad. If you have a dream of financial independence and you see yourself not succeeding, that is very frustrating. And I appreciate and feel your frustration. However, doing business and making money requires persisting through the learning curve until you acquire the business know-how to beginn succeeding. For some that come quickly, and for other more slowly or never at all. Believe me, some business knowledge is very important, and if you are starting from scractch, give yourself time to learn some of the basics.

Do you need Salehoo to find product supplier? In my opinion, absolutely not. Do you need Salehoo to find untapped ecommerce niche markets? Again, no. At least, I certainly don’t think so. The Salehoo staff and membership can certainly give advice on productive under utilized niches, and you can also use the Salehoo research tools. However, you certainly don’t need Salehoo to find niche markets. Can it help, yes, but you can do your own research (I talk about that in posts on this site) using free online and offline resources. However, Salehoo might just be the helpful resource you need to reach that tipping point where you topple over into success. I honestly can’t say. I certainly haven’t regretted joining, but that’s just me.

Data feeds for Wordpress. Wordpress, in case you don’t know, is a free, open source blog platform that has become very popular over the years. Part of its popularity is due to the fact that it is very adaptable, and many people use Wordpress as a means to easily and quickly publish websites that look like websites, not blogs, per se.

In my blog post, http://www.proproductsourcing.com/wholesale-product-tips/2-wholesale-dropship-sources/, someone left a comment asking about data feeds for Wordpress. One thing to be aware of is that one of the things that makes Wordpress so adaptable is the ability to modify its function by adding plugins, programs that alter what you can do with Wordpress. In order to run a data feed using Wordpress, you will need to find a plugin adding that functionality. The question now becomes, what plugins are available allowing Worpress to run a data feed?

The answer, or at least a few possible answers, can be found by doing a a Google search using the phrase, “wordpress data feed.” I’m sure you can think of other variations. The person above also wanted to know what auto parts wholesalers provide data feeds. That is a harder question to answer. However, I can help out a bit and will continue looking into this.

Let me start out by saying that some wholesalers do provide data feeds upon request. But you have to ask. Remember that most true, wholesale businesses do not use the Internet as their primary means of promotion and therefore don’t necessarily advertise their data feed. The widespread use of the Internet for promotion is an Internet marketing thing, not really a wholesaler marketing strategy. To get the answer to this question, you need to find a list of auto parts wholesalers and then call them up and ask if they can provide a data feed. In the post I mentioned above, I do provide a link to an auto parts wholesaler, but you will need to contact a sales rep to find out if they offer a data feed.

I believe Inventory Source has an auto parts wholesale supplier or two that uses data feeds. You would need to go to Inventory Source to check that out, however.

You can also try Salehoo. Salehoo is an online wholesale/dropship membership site listing thousands of suppliers and products. I am a member and am happy with their service. However, would that work for you? I don’t know. You can have a look and see if you think it might work for you:

Today, (6/7/2010), a representative from Inventory Source left an extremely informative comment for anyone interested in an insider glimpse into dropshipping and shopping care-supplier integration. Regarding suppliers with fees….I think we have only about 3 suppliers in our network who have any kinds of fees, like SMC. We have looked at removing them but some users still like their catalogs so they have remained since they are still a legit product source who directly ships the items. I would say 90% of the suppliers with some monthly fee are middleman…the remaining are simply try to reduce the number of resellers or non-performing resellers. If you ever did go with a supplier who had a monthly cost I would advise against it unless if you sell over X/month they wave that cost. If they charge you a fee regardless you would have to wonder if they doubt the ability for anyone to be able to sell the products in large amounts…which is why even they are trying to get revenue from some source other then just product sales. In short…there are just too many good supplier options to really feel the need to go with any source that has a monthly account fee just to sell products.

To respond to the order integration with VM. There are carts or modules for carts which say they are a supplier integration. This means you can flag and item by supplier and have the order details sent to that supplier. However, most of these integrations simply send an email. This might be fine for some people using a very small specialty supplier. However, suppliers like Wynit, DH, TechData, IngramMicro, USSCO, etc…do not accept orders from an email or fax. Many of the larger suppliers only allow you to log into your web account or integrate with their FTP directories or order API directly for bulk automated orders. This is the real reason why there is not a standard order integration plug in for a cart and even why systems like Stoneedge dont offer a true order integration option. This is why we have always focused on the inventory automation services. However, while we have not publicly announced it before. I would say we are about 1-2 months away from allowing order automation options for users on all of our integrated platforms, including Virtuemart/Joomla

Salehoo Scam–Is Salehoo Legitimate?

I’ve talked about this in other posts–the Salehoo scam question–but the question keeps coming up, and many people come to this site based on that question alone. Is Salehoo legitimate? If you have looked into Salehoo for any time at all, you have probably discovered that there is a rabidly vocal cadre who vehemently insist that Salehoo is an utter sham. Ultimately, the only way you will every know for sure–assuming it is importat enough–is to sign up and find out for yourself.

Before I give my own opinion, I’ll say right out that I am a member. You will notice that I advertise Salehoo on my site, and I do so because I think it is worthwhile product. Obviously, I don’t think Salehoo is a scam. As a member, I can tell you that Salehoo provides a directory of approximately 8000 suppliers. Among them, there are drop shippers, wholesalers, product manufacturers, liquidators, and surpluss supply sources. There are also many general goods suppliers who sell steeply discounted goods at near or below wholesale prices.

In addition to the directory, Salehoo also has a forum that is fairly actively attended and which I think is perhaps its most valuable asset. Not only is there a wealth of information you can data mine on product sources, but the community itself provides blunt and honest up to date feedback and advice on your product sourcing/ecommerce questions. Forum categories include: dropshipping and dropshippers, general trading advice, product sources and suppliers, supplier wanted, products and brands, and scams, ripoffs, fraud and complaints.

Salehoo also makes available basic educational materials to help members on the following topics:

importing and shipping
Setting up a business
finding and sourcing products
scam prevention
selling on ebay
tools for ebay sellers

I have been a member for seveal years now, I have never had reason to think that Salehoo wasn’t a legitimate membership. Will the Salehoo membership solve your product sourcing problems? That I can’t say. I hope so, but everyone’s needs are different, and there are simply no one-size-fits-all solutions to ecommerce.

Personally, I don’t think you need to join Salehoo or any other membership to find wholesale drop ship product suppliers, suppliers for ebay auctions. or suppliers for any other venture you have in mind.

The Question I Always Ask

The question I always ask when when the subject of wholesale products sourcing comes up is, ” What product or products do you want to sell?” If you can answer that question, then I don’t think you need a membership. It doesn’t hurt to have as many resources under your belt as possible, but I think if you have figured out your business well enough to know what it is you are going to sell then product suppliers will start to fall into line.

Also, what you are selling will to some degree narrow the kind of supplier and pool of available sources. For example, if you are going to sell hand painted clothing, joining a membership with thousands of suppliers largely geared to mass market items may not work for you. If you are going to be selling jewelry made by local artisans, then again, a wholesale supply membership may not be of much help.

My advice to you before joining any product sourcing membership is to ask yourself what problem you want the membership to help you solve and how the membership will fit in with your business plan. Of course, there is nothing wrong with joining just to find out what it is all about or for “recreatioal” purposes, but I’m assuming that you are reading this with business on your mind. I hope this helps.

Dropshipping Wholesalers Scam

I’ve been noticing a recent increase in the number of questions asking about dropshipping and wholesale supply scams. This is an important issue because legitimate products sources are vital to running a home based Internet business that relies on sale of physical products.

At present time, there is, in my opinion, a great deal of misunderstanding about dropshipping and wholesale products, and I believe this misunderstanding leads many to believe that they are the victim of scammers. There are, of course, many people willing to fleece the innocent, but all to often the accusation of fraud results from lack of correct information.

I’d like to address three area of confusion:

how to identify a true wholesaler
what a dropshipper is
what a wholesale dropshipper is

First, in the United States, a legitimate wholesale business is an authorized distributor of products from one or more manufacturers. A true wholesale business is licensed by its state of residence to do business as a wholesaler and to sell products without charging sales tax to licensed retail businesses. As such, a true wholesaler must require proof of your sales tax permit in order to sell to you. A wholesale business sets its wholesale prices, so although wholesale prices are generally lower than the retail prices you see in shops, it is up to the wholesaler to determine prices. There isn’t one generic price. Usually, wholesalers give the lowest price when products are purchased in bulk quantities. The greater the quantity, the lower the price per unit.

A dropshipper, on the other hand, is a business that warehouses products and ships them out under your business name. In this scenario, you sell the products and collect payment from your customer, and then place your order(s) with the dropshipper, who handles the warehousing and shipping.

Many of the dropshippers you find advertising on the Internet are retail businesses selling goods to you at a discount. As such they are a sort of “middleman” between you and the real wholesaler. Unless your dropshipper requires you to have a sales tax permit in order to business, it is not a true wholesaler. That does not make them a scam or fraud, however. Many dropshippers advertise “wholesale prices” or “below wholesale prices” or “wholesale to the public.” While this wording may be a little misleading, it is not dishonest because it doesn’t explictly state that it is a wholesale business.

But it is up to you to determine whether or not a dropshipper or any other discount business is a true wholesaler. The way to do that is to look for the sales tax permit requirement. If the business sells to anyone regardless of sales tax permit, it is not a true wholesaler.

A true wholesale dropshipper is a wholesale business who also dropships products. WYNIT and DBL would be a good examples of this. WYNIT andDBL are two of the larget wholesalers in the U.S. of commercial electronics products, and they also dropship for you. In order to business with them, you must set up an account and also fax in proof of your sales tax permit or other authorization from your state to sell retail goods.

I hope this clarifies some of the questions regarding wholesalers and dropshippers and how to avoid scams, frauds, and misunderstandings.

Why is ebay so successful? I don’t see how ebay itself can fail to be successful. If we are talking about ebay and not people who sell on ebay, then I think the answer boils down to just a few nuts and bolts factors. Can you guess what they are?

First, ebay brings together buyers and sellers in a global, online market place that promises, for the most part, a secure shopping and selling enviornment. As a shopper, you can shop the world from your kitchen table for almost any item conceivable. As a seller, you can reach out to buyers anywhere in the world capable of plugging in. In my opinion, that really wraps it up in a nutshell. Of course, let’s not forget the technology that allows ebay to manage the complexity of the thousands upon thousands of auctions taking place at any given moment, and the hundreds of thousands of financial transactions taking place every moment of the 24 hour day.

Although I am not particularly gung-ho on ebay, think about what you get in terms of advertising space for your product auctions for the price and compare that to the reach of local radio, newspaper, and tv advertising. Even though the cost of “doing” ebay has gone up considerably over the years, it is still a pretty good deal. As an aside, it is easy to forget that ebay is not the only game in town. It may be the biggest, but there are many other auction venues to take advantage of, these days.

It is also relatively easy to go into business as a seller on ebay. With the economic crisis, ebay has flourished allowing instant home business start-up for the newly unemployed trying to make fast cash. And for shopper trying to save a buck, the competition on ebay often keeps prices at or below even wholesale prices. Moreover, with the economic down slump, more and more people are open to purchasing used items, and ebay is, if nothing else, the world’s most magnificent flea market and perfect venue for selling used, damaged, and one-off items. This, by the way, is an ebay seller’s secret–that ebay is a dream market place for used, liquidated, closed-out, one of a kind, surplus, collectible, and even damaged items.

As I said above, I don’t see how ebay cannot be successful. In fact, now that I think about it, starting my own regional auction service might not be a bad idea . . . . Basically, I think that ebays success lies in its ability to bring buyers and sellers and virtually every market imaginable together in a single, easy to use online market place.
