Liquidation, Closeout, Wholesale, EBay Product Sourcing

The title is a mouthfull! Sorry about that. A few product sourcing tips coming up. First, I want to mention one thing that is very important to understand about eBay. EBay is reallya wholesale selling environment. For those of you reading who have never looked at eBay in this light, pause for a moment and consider what I’ve just said. EBay is a selling environment for wholesalers, not so much for retailers.

That is to say, in many of the eBay product areas, the prices are already at wholesale or below. That makes it very hard if not impossible for those selling at retail prices to compete. Let’s take electronic gadgets as an example. This is an extremely popular category, and one in which the prices are already generally at or below wholesale. If you are trying to buy at wholesale prices you don’t have any margin for mark-up. The eBay fees alone eat up any chance of profit. What this means is that you have to buy at liquidation and closeout prices to turn a profit. If you can pull this off and stick with it, you will make a profit, but you are playing a numbers game because you’ve got to keep your volume up and sell lots of items.

We’re Getting Close to the Tips
Buying liquidation and closeout inventory means buying in bulk lots. Usually that means really large bulk lots because that drives down your per piece price. That’s how you can sell either on your own site, at flea markets, through classified, even on eBay and make a profit. You can, of course, buy wholesale and make a profit, though probably not on eBay–or not without difficulty–if you are selling in popular “niches” such consumer electronics or DVDs.

The Tips, and More to Say After This
Ok, a few tips. For wholesale companies, two of the best known are WYNIT and DBL. These are wholesalers. You will need a sales tax permit to sign up with them. They are the real deal. Very professional. You’ll have your own sales rep and so forth.

For liquidation and closeout, check Savon.com, thecloseoutclub.com, viatrading.com, and liquidation.com. Ok, I don’t really like liquidation.com because it is an auction site, but having said that, you can pick up good prices if you watch and wait and understand your niche.

The Best Liquidation Tip
The best liquidation, closeout tip I can give–and forgive me for flogging Salehoo, but Salehoo has started brokering closeout stock from major retailors. This is important because Salehoo verifies that the products are in good condition and also sells in small bulk lots. That mean you get the big lot discount but pay a small bulk lot price. This is the only wholesale dropship directory membership that personally brokers liquidation stock (that I know of).
